3. Upgrading Dairy Biogas to Biomethane and Other Fuels

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Dairy biogas can be combusted to generate electricity and/or heat. This report, however, focuses on alternate uses of biogas including the upgrading of biogas to biomethane, a product equivalent to natural gas or other higher-grade fuels. Biomethane, which typically contains more than 95% CH (with the remainder as CO 4 2), has no technical barrier to being used interchangeably with natural gas, whether for electrical generation, heating, cooling, pumping, or as a vehicle fuel. The process can be controlled to produce biomethane that meets a pre-determined standard of quality. Biomethane can also be put into the natural gas supply pipeline, though there are major institutional barriers to this alternative.

Selected Methods of Advanced Biogas Upgrading

The upgrading of biogas for the production of biomethane to be injected to the natural gas grid has gained significant importance in recent years. It is often considered to be superior to the production of electricity and district heat with internal combustion engines mainly because of better energy utilisation, higher flexibility and beneficial economic prospects. Biogas upgrading is commonly ...

Framework to benchmark sustainability of biomethane supply chains: Facilitating sustainability decision making in adopting biomethane as a public transportation fuel in Western Europe

Among various strategies nurtured to triumph energy and climate issues, adoption of cleaner sources for energy production lead in the way. In this article a framework has been presented from a systems perspective to benchmark biomethane supply chains consisting of biogas upgrading, biomethane distribution and refilling. The framework is mostly applicable in the context of Western Europe as far ...

Deciphering the electron transfer mechanisms for biogas upgrading to biomethane within a mixed culture biocathode

Biogas upgrading is an expanding field dealing with the increase in methane content of the biogas to produce biomethane. Biomethane has a high calorific content and can be used as a vehicle fuel or directly injected into the gas grid. Bioelectrochemical systems (BES) could become an alternative for biogas upgrading, by which the yield of the process in terms of carbon utilisation could be incre...

Operational Study and Simulation of a Biogas Upgrading Plant

Samson O. Masebinu, Akinwale O. Aboyade, Edison Muzenda Abstract-The drive for finding alternative energy to supplement fossil based fuel within the South African energy sector has led to research on waste to energy in particular biomethane as vehicular fuels. Biogas is produced from the anaerobic decomposition of organic matter with 40-70% vol. of methane. Biogas if upgraded, by removing the n...

Biogas upgrading by chemical absorption using ammonia rich absorbents derived from wastewater.

The use of ammonia (NH3) rich wastewaters as an ecological chemical absorption solvent for the selective extraction of carbon dioxide (CO2) during biogas upgrading to 'biomethane' has been studied. Aqueous ammonia absorbents of up to 10,000 gNH3 m(-3) demonstrated CO2 absorption rates higher than recorded in the literature for packed columns using 20,000-80,000 g NH3 m(-3) which can be ascribed...
